Frame Roof Valleys Using Battens
Metal roof battens will not warp or rot nor are they subject to insect attack.
Frame roof valleys using battens. For this example a section of roof is 20 feet wide. Install the valley battens on the sides of the roof that you want to place the valley flashing. The plywood covers the entire roof and is solidly attached to the rafters providing a sturdy base for both insulation and metal roofing panels. Shingles and tiles are affixed using the battens as spacing.
Place the flashing on the upper portion or the upper flange of the. Batten joints should be staggered over the roof so that three consecutive battens nz 2 consecutive battens are not jointed on the same rafter. Roofing battens or battening also called roofing lath are used to provide the fixing point for roofing materials such as shingles or tiles. A batten is a roofing component made of a thin layer of metal plastic or wood and is used as a fixing point for roof tiles and roofing sheets.
Battens should be nailed. The valley area of a roof the straight lines formed when two different planes of the roof meet is a critical area that handles a tremendous amount of water run off. While decking is not required for a metal roof and is often not used for shops barns or other outbuildings if a metal roof is being put onto a home or a garage the use of decking is common. Access the roof using an extension ladder.
Hip and valley joints. Measure each section of the roof from side to side parallel to the line of the fascia board. Metal roof battens may also be used with steel or timber support framing. Metal roof battens may be used with steel or tile cladding.
All joints in battens must meet in the centre of trusses or rafters and not be joined over girder trusses. The next batten is to be placed with at least one mount flange overlap figure 3 making sure the next batten sits down flat in the existing roof cladding valleys. The spacing of the battens depend on the type of roofing material and are applied horizontally. Fasten the roof sheets to the batten as per the appropriate stratco roofing specifications.
If the batten does not sit flat in the valley cut the battens into shorter lengths to allow for the excess creep. The battens are made in approximately 3 0m lengths to allow for cladding creep along the width of the roof. Step 2 install the valley battens. Battens are not always used in a roofing system.
Metal roof battens offer extraordinary strength to weight values and are lighter than timber battens. Caution battens or purlins as they are sometimes called must be fastened to the roof joist or trusses with the proper length and number of fasteners to prevent pullout. Fix through the ridge flashing into the roofing batten as shown below using the appropriate cladding screws.
