Fire Pit Gravel Base
I didn t realize at the time how much it would resemble a sand box to them.
Fire pit gravel base. Wet the gravel thoroughly with a garden hose and then use the hand tamper to compact it into a hard. The gravel also creates a level base for the stones to rest on. Fire pits commonly consist of an inner wall an outer wall a cap i e a flat tabletop like surface around the opening at the top of the pit and decorative stones or rocks in the center. Add logs and kindling and you re ready for a pleasant evening by the fire.
Fifteen to seventeen stones. Several years ago we built the fire pit and added pea gravel to a muddy corner of the yard. Check the contents of your kit to see if additional materials are needed before assembling. A beautiful fire pit area takes yearly maintenance.
Shovel four inches of gravel and four inches of sand then tamp each layer flat and level. It worked well enough although if you don t already have a good supply of it sand seems like the better choice. With a little thought and effort you can dress anything up even a random outdoor fire pit. Use paving stones or landscaping blocks that are angled on the sides.
But for stability the base of the wall must be buried below ground in a hole lined with gravel providing drainage and protecting against frost heaves in winter. Add a few inches of lava rocks to hold the bricks in place. Our kit can be installed on grass on top of a gravel paver base or on top of a patio. Fire pit dimensions are measured from the outside of the ring so keep in mind that the interior of the fire pit will be smaller than 3 6 feet depending on the thickness of your fire pit ring.
Pour a generous amount of crushed gravel paver base into the hole so your finished base will be approximately five inches thick. We re pleased with the way it turned out and have already enjoyed a few fires. I was living on a farm and we had an ample supply of the stuff so it seemed like a natural fit. I have to admit the kids were more excited about our new pea gravel filled fire pit than we were. Arrange the stones in a circle to make the fire ring on top of your gravel and sand base making sure that your first layer of blocks is secure and level. To align the bricks with the top of the fire pit add more paver base gravel or more fire bricks to the bottom of the pit. Lining the bottom of your fire pit with gravel.
Our fire pit kit is comprised of blocks and a metal ring insert. A fire pit should sit low to the ground with walls rising no more than a foot off the ground.
